Constantly falling since November 2014, polish coal prices for the energy sector slightly bounced in July (by 4.6% comparing to May). Still, it was not enough to save the mining industry from achieving 1.445 billion PLN loss in the first two quarters of 2015, twice as much as in Q1 and Q2 of 2014, when it accounted for 772.3 million PLN.
Situation is caused mainly by the large decrease of prices (by 7.3% 2014-2015) with the stable and rather high costs of production: in 2014 every tonne of coal was sold with 26.46 PLN of loss, in 2015 that number increased to 39.81 PLN.
Coal production decreased by 1.5 million tonnes in the first half of 2015 (from 29.5 million in Q1 and Q2 2014 to 28 million in Q1 and Q2 2015), and while being followed by increase in sales (both on domestic market and export), in total sales revenues were comparable to the ones achieved last year due to the fall of prices.
