The group of industrial consumers consists of numerous of companies representing variety of businesses. Most of them use steam coal to fulfill the individual energy demand, but some need the coal for the production purposes (chemical industry, e.g. Soda Polska Ciech). Almost all of the companies are private owned. The main industries within these group are: cement, sugar, paper, chemical, milk and oil.
Basically, every large factory located outside of a city with district heating needs its own power and heating, and this demand can be covered only by the own facility. Table bellow shows the seasonal demand in the largest companies from various coal consuming sectors (estimated, season 2014/2015).
Geographically, 64% of total coal use by the industrial consumers is accounted in only two voivodeships: Silesian and Opole. In 2012, for the total consumption of 17.26 million tonnes, this two regions used respectively 5.66 and 5.43 million tonnes. Lesser Poland taking third place used only 1.16 million tonnes, followed by Kuyavian-Pomeranian which used 1,08 million tonnes. The rest of voivodeships accounted less than 1 million tonnes.
Quality of ordered coal is similar to the one in heat&power industry, although many industrial consumers are very concerned also on other parameters than calorific value and sulphur (ash, chlorine content etc.). Also, some companies do not allow any range of the coal quality and demand a fuel of a precise parameters due to the facility requirements.
Coal prices in this group are usually set once for the whole contract, but some companies buy coal on something that could be considered as a spot market (negotiating prices separately for each part of delivery). Part of them are doing it constantly, others only when they observe continued fall of prices. Large consumers usually buy directly from the producers. Some of them, to receive better quality coal by average, are mixing the deliveries between Polish producers and traders (who can provide coal of lower sulphur content and higher calorific value). Smaller consumers (30,000 Mt and less) depend only on traders.
