INTERNATIONAL STEAM COAL PRICES: APRIL 2016

Warmer and warmer weather on the Northern Hem. and global oversupply were the main factors of further decrease of international coal price levels. Being the border-bottom of three main markers with all its green- and efficiency-oriented energy policies in Europe, ARA index still did not went as low as it could, mainly because of redirection of some Colombian deliveries to Asia (Thailand, India).

Colombian expansion to Asia was also one of the reasons of decreased export from Richards Bay terminal, along with slightly lower demand during the monsoon period from India, the main consumer of South African coal (61.5% of total RB export). On the other hand, Pacific market experienced increased demand for steam coal from Vietnam and growing demand for coking coal from China.
